Meet The Expert | Neil Hume
Neil Hume, HSSMI’s Technical Specialist in Sustainable Manufacturing, brings over 40 years of experience across the automotive and aerospace industries, with a proven track record of successful planning, implementation and delivery of new products manufactured using new manufacturing capability.
A Career Spanning Automotive and Aerospace
Prior to joining HSSMI, Neil held a number of senior roles across the automotive and aerospace sectors, including leading the Manufacturing Engineering & Technical Services elements of new powertrain manufacturing, test and certification departments, equipment and facilities.
A Track Record Across Some of the Biggest Names in the Industry
Neil’s project experience reads like a tour of the UK’s most significant manufacturing programmes:

- Swegon — UK Air Handling Systems Manufacturer. Neil led strategy definition, rationalisation and consolidation of multiple product lines into a single, efficient manufacturing operation.
- HVS — UK Hydrogen Powered HGV Manufacturer. Neil devised the operating system and methodology for building “AP” level prototype HGV trucks, including “day in the life” operating patterns, reporting structure and issue management.
- UK/US Hydrogen Aerospace OEM — Zero Emission Aviation Powertrain Manufacturer. As Technical Specialist, Neil designed the End of Line Whole Product Test Facilities capable of achieving FAA/CAA certification, as well as the high-level Product Conception to Delivery Gateway Process and associated project timing plan.
- UK Cell Manufacturer — EV Battery Manufacturer. Neil worked on Manufacturing Business Systems & Organisational Design, including a Quality Management System suitable for continuous high-volume battery cell manufacturing in a “Mega Factory.”
- Jaguar Land Rover — Luxury Vehicle Manufacturer. As Senior Manager, Neil led significant elements of programmes that delivered new product and manufacturing capability, including a £1bn Powertrain Manufacturing Centre, an EV Battery Assembly Centre, and new BiW facility delivery for the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport models.
- Bentley Cars Ltd — Luxury Vehicle Manufacturer. As Consultant, Neil led the delivery of new end-to-end business process, organisational design, and facilities design and delivery for whole vehicle emissions testing through to test facilities certification by US Federal, EU and other worldwide regulatory bodies.

Neil’s core skills span new product design and development, programme management, organisation design, quality management systems, facilities design and delivery, process development, total productive maintenance, operations management and continuous improvement — backed by a B-Eng (Hons) in Engineering.
Few people in the industry can match Neil’s breadth: from designing FAA/CAA-certifiable test facilities to overseeing billion-pound powertrain centres, he has been at the heart of some of the automotive and aerospace sector’s most ambitious manufacturing programmes.
