My First Week at HSSMI

Science? Not since GCSEs
My past experiences have been in the lifestyle and consumer industries and third sector to date, where I have moved around with much ease between fashion companies, PR agencies and a couple of stints with charities. My most recent posting at a government department where I was involved in the day to day of Whitehall politics and policies was certainly an experience I won’t forget anytime soon!
However, none of that prepared me for the ‘science world’ – and the number of acronyms and terminology that came with it here at HSSMI. It was then that I realised that engineering and technology are industries that I had very limited knowledge of and yet despite that, I had decided to enter at HSSMI under the guise of ‘Marketing and Communications Coordinator’.
Welcome to HSSMI
The induction process was thorough and completed for most part within the first day, with a couple of further sessions spread out across three days. This was so that I could ‘crack on’ with my work whilst being introduced to the organisation through various meetings with managers.
As a new member of staff, I have been welcomed by everyone and made to feel at home in the office from day one. I still have so much to learn and sometimes the thought of what I don’t know or understand very well (eg Cobots and AI) can be a little daunting. However, with such a wonderful team who are patient with my questions, who support me and assist me in any way necessary, I am confident that my knowledge will significantly increase over the next few weeks. Who knows – I may even become a pseudo engineer further down the line?!
Looking ahead
As I begin to further understand the scope of the great work done by my colleagues here in HQ and around the regions, I am eager to jump in and start promoting these success stories and championing our capabilities to our stakeholders. I am already involved in the Virtual Reality Show taking place in April where DETC will be exhibiting and HSSMI’s marketing strategy is already underway!
2018 has been off to a great start!
