Meet The Expert | Joe Turner
Launching a new manufacturing facility is challenging. Launching one for a brand-new electrification programme, with all the unknowns that come with it, is harder still. Joe Turner, HSSMI’s Principal for Manufacturing Strategy, has built his career on exactly that challenge.
With over a decade of experience across automotive manufacturing launch programmes, combining Logistics, Quality and Manufacturing expertise, Joe has been involved in a number of critical electrification launch programmes with companies across the globe, in both automotive and aerospace. He brings a solid understanding of key requirements, interdependencies, and how to avoid the common and costly pitfalls that can derail a launch.
A Foundation Built at Jaguar Land Rover
Prior to joining HSSMI, Joe held several roles at Jaguar Land Rover, leading the quality assurance programme for vehicles exported to international manufacturing partners in Kenya, Malaysia and Pakistan. He was involved in the manufacturing launch of new facilities in China and Brazil, and more recently led the facilitation of component imports to support JLR’s electrification and e-motor manufacturing launches in the UK.
Delivering Complex Launch Programmes Across the Industry
Joe’s project experience spans some of the most ambitious electrification launches in the UK and beyond:

- Britishvolt — The UK’s First Gigafactory. As Project Lead, Joe led the early-stage strategic planning of the logistics system design for the Britishvolt facility, including intermodal freight strategy, warehouse storage and systems, and material flow strategies. He continued to oversee the logistics team through detailed design, including layouts, ASRS design, MHE and material flow planning.
- US/UK Hydrogen Aerospace OEM — Manufacturing Strategy and Facility Layout Definition for Powertrain Production. Joe led a large team of engineers and technical leads in the strategic definition of the full facility layout and design, including production system design for e-motors, fuel cells, machining and ancillary components — defining process, volumes, throughputs, layouts, equipment, utilities and costings to shape the overall facility.
- Tevva Motors — Battery and Hydrogen Truck Manufacturer. As Project Lead, Joe led a large team through the development of a Manufacturing Strategy document and the detailed engineering development of the full production facility, including logistics and external site areas through to equipment installation. Validation was completed via discrete event simulation and virtual build events.
- Jaguar Land Rover — ICE to E-Machine Production Transition. Joe led a large team of manufacturing engineers to develop a strategic proposal for transitioning equipment and facilities from internal combustion engine manufacturing towards e-motor manufacture, including full equipment assessment, industrial engineering assessments, and detailed 2D CAD layouts.
- LEVC / Geely — Production, Logistics and Waste Area Optimisation. As Project Lead, Joe led a team assessing production, logistics and waste areas over a two-year period of cross-business stakeholder engagement, delivering significant cost and efficiency savings as LEVC launched the VN-5 vehicle.

Joe holds a BSc in Logistics and Supply Chain Management, and his core skills — team leadership, project management, quality assurance, manufacturing engineering, strategic production planning, supply chain design and logistics system design — reflect the unique blend of disciplines needed to launch complex facilities successfully.
